Railcard Holder # 24 - Jo Smith-Kearney

As part of the ongoing celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the Disabled Persons Railcard we're delighted to present testimonial number 24, from Jo Smith-Kearney:

I have had a Disabled Persons Railcard for a few years now and it has made a huge difference to my quality of life. Travelling is more affordable enabling me to visit family and friends regularly.

Before I got my Railcard I would not travel as much as I do now, it gives me the freedom to go when and where I want to and I usually buy an Open Return so that I can stay as long as I need to. As my family live in Ireland and I usually go to give my relative a break from caring for a very frail elderly relative and she appreciates this.

Sometimes I might go to the coast for a few days, or to the races, anywhere that will recharge my batteries! I have always loved travelling by train, and one of my favourite journeys is the north Wales line to Holyhead, the scenery is beautiful although I have often thought of stopping off on route for a few days.

There are no traffic jams to sit through or sat navs to get you lost.
Providing you are on time and organised the journey can be really enjoyable & I always seem to meet nice people while travelling.

So without my Railcard, I would be stuck at home and miserable. It is also more economical and kinder to the environment than using a car. I got rid of mine!

Combined with the bus pass, the Railcard keeps me more mobile than I have ever been.

My Mum is luckier as she has the Freedom pass which can be used on both bus and rail, and so she is never at home.

What a difference having one has made to my lifestyle, and an improvement to my health and wellbeing.
