Stephen Fry voted number one!

Stephen Fry has been voted the celebrity that Disabled Persons Railcard holders would most like to travel with on a train journey in Great Britain.

We recently ran a poll asking you, as Railcard holders, which famous celebrity you would most like to be accompanied by on a train journey in Great Britain. After narrowing the finalists down to a choice of 6, actor, comedian, author and TV presenter Stephen Fry came out tops!

Runners up included Dawn French, Michael Palin, Joanna Lumley, Christine Bleakley and Michael Portillo.

Stephen Fry was delighted with the accolade and said:

“I am overcome at such an honour. I travel by train when I can and often see that life isn’t always as easy as it could be for disabled people in railway stations and aboard but I have noticed that it has improved and that mostly staff are excellent.

“Churchill once said you can judge a civilisation by the way it treats its prisoners. I think there’s truth in that. But I also think a nation can also be judged by the way it treats its disabled population. I’d like to think that any British citizen would be a good travelling companion for a disabled person: helpful without being interfering and friendly and chatty without being patronising.

“To be singled out makes me very proud but I hope it makes everyone think of how they treat their fellow citizens, whether able bodied or not.”

David Sindall, Head of Disability and Inclusion at ATOC said:

“A wise choice from Disabled Persons Railcard holders who I am sure would do well for entertainment on a train journey with one of my favourite TV celebrities too.”
